New research shows microbes in our cities are evolving to resist the very cleaners we use to eliminate them. The remains of these elephants were first discovered in 2000 near the town of Pampore, but the identity of the fossils, cause of death and evidence of human intervention remained unknown until now. By learning more about this process in reptiles, researchers hope to better inform other scientists working to improve the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases in humans. Researchers show how a simple system using woodchips and a bit of glorified sawdust can dramatically reduce nitrogen, phosphorus, and multiple common drugs in wastewater. Like a human vaccine, defense priming occurs when part of a plant experiences stress. This weakly activates defense mechanisms that then fully come to life when the plant undergoes a real attack. |
