Researchers have successfully redesigned a key protein from the coronavirus, and the modification could enable much faster and more stable production of vaccines worldwide. Challenging the quintessentially unpredictable nature of black swan events, bioengineers at Stanford University are suggesting a method for forecasting these supposedly unforeseeable fluctuations. In a new study, researchers describe an inexpensive new device that functions like a conventional magnetic stir bar, but that can automatically measure and transmit information. The new CRISPR-guided DNA base editing technologies are designed to efficiently induce "transversion" alterations of DNA bases while minimizing levels of unwanted "bystander" mutations. By using data from a huge population study in the UK, the researchers showed that people in the UK who carry the Neandertal variant of the ion channel experience more pain.
