From in vitro to ex vivo: How Incubators Ensure Repeatability

The primary purpose of a cell culture incubator is to provide accurate, repeatable, and flexible environments essential to replication of the in vivo condition in vitro. Once the physiology of a specific in vivo condition is known, the investigator can create an ex vivo model inside the incubator chamber by managing a balance of temperature, CO2, and sometimes O2 in an environment that prevents media desiccation. CO2 incubators come in a variety of sizes to fit a wide range of culture conditions and applications. Let’s take a look at a few common incubator sizes, the applications they support, and some (not all) of the features and technologies they boast to ensure precision, uniformity, and repeatability of in vitro conditions.
