X-Ray Crystallography System for Chemists

Booth 919.
The SMART X2S benchtop X-ray crystallography system is suited for fully automated 3-D chemical structure determination. The unit has been designed for chemists who have no special crystallography training at colleges, universities, and bio-pharma and chemical companies. While molecular structure information is beneficial, the traditional need for trained crystallographers has made access to structural information inconvenient or expensive for many chemists. This unit allows inorganic and organic chemists to produce atomic-resolution, 3-D structures of routine samples quickly and easily in their own labs at the touch of a button. The system automates the previously difficult aspects of X-ray structure determination, from sample loading and alignment, through data collection, to the mathematical structure solution. Weighing less than 70 kg and requiring only 0.5 kW of standard single-phase AC power, the benchtop unit can be easily installed in any academic or industrial chemistry lab.

Striving Toward Secondary Goals
Late last month, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich stunned most everyone when he declared his promise that "by the end of my second term, we will have the first permanent base on the moon." While I don’t fault Gingrich for dreaming and trying to set high standards and goals, I can’t help but think of the enormous amount of known and unknown variables that significantly deter this accomplishment...continue
