Portable Capillary GC–TMS System

The Torion GUARDION-7 GC-TMS features a low-thermal mass capillary gas chromatograph (GC) with high-speed temperature programming (>2 C/sec) and a miniature toroidal ion trap mass spectrometer (TMS) with a nominal unit mass resolution over a 50- to 500-Dalton mass range.

The portable, 24-V battery operated system weighs <28 lbs and includes an on-board helium GC carrier gas supply cartridge of 2500 psig, 90cc. The small, self-contained GC-TMS is packaged in a hardened case measuring 18.5" x 14" x 7". Enhancements include electronic pressure control (EPC) of the GC carrier gas and a rechargeable battery system for renewable power.

Samples are injected using CUSTODION SPME syringes. Target analytes in air, headspace, liquid or dissolved solid samples are rapidly trapped on the active coated surface of the SPME fiber, which is mounted in an easy-to-operate injection molded syringe. The instrument provides step-by-step sample injection instructions via its 7" LCD screen and graphical user interface.

The on-board firmware automatically controls all GC and TMS system operations without user intervention. New PC-based operation software, CHROMION-1 and CHROMION-AP, are also available. CHROMION-1 enables the user to edit the GC-TMS method parameters, calibrate the instrument, and develop target analyte libraries for automated detection and identification of targeted chemical compounds based on their characteristic retention times and mass spectra. Results are reported in an easy-to-understand tabular format that is displayed on the LCD screen of the GUARDION-7. CHROMION-AP provides display, plot and data processing capabilities for not only the GUARDION-7 but also other MS data files.

The fast, easy-to-operate GC-TMS system is suited for rapid (<5 min) and highly sensitive and selective detection of various compounds, including chemical warfare agents, explosives, environmental pollutants, and hazardous substances.
