FT-IRs Enable Field Analysis of Soil Samples

FT-IRs Enable Field Analysis of Soil SamplesA2 Technologies' portable, handheld FT-IR systems are optimized for geoscience applications, including the compositional analysis of rocks, minerals and soils.

With the battery-powered Exoscan and FlexScan FT-IR systems, samples no longer need be transported back to the lab. They enable critical information about a field site to be obtained in real-time and reduce the number of less important sample measurements. Furthermore, this technology can identify minerals and soil components as well as quantify molecular compounds including oil contamination or degree of hydration in soil.

The systems offer the ruggedness and spectroscopic performance that are necessary for field-based geoscience applications. Equipped with a diffuse reflectance sampling interface, they provide detailed molecular analysis of granular soil or rough rock samples, and no sample preparation is required.

The Exoscan system, with its optional docking station, serves as both a benchtop lab system and, in seconds, transforms into an equally powerful field analyzer. The lightweight FlexScan is suited for analyzing samples over large areas where many measurements are required.

Striving Toward Secondary Goals
Late last month, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich stunned most everyone when he declared his promise that "by the end of my second term, we will have the first permanent base on the moon." While I don’t fault Gingrich for dreaming and trying to set high standards and goals, I can’t help but think of the enormous amount of known and unknown variables that significantly deter this accomplishment...continue
