The BreathID system from Exalenz Bioscience is a real-time breath test platform that analyzes ppm changes in the 13C to 12C ratio in a patient’s breath. Easy to perform with one-touch operation, the test is done by connecting a patient to the device using a nasal breathing cannula. Once connected, the patient’s breath is sampled continuously, eliminating the need for staff to collect, label and analyze breath samples.
The device automatically determines the end of the test and prints out results with an average testing time of 10 min. Clinical studies show that it has superior sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 99.2% so results are accurate. The test is 13C-urea based, which involves the ingestion of a non-radioactive 13C enriched test drink. Urea breath testing is widely supported by Gastroenterology societies’ guidelines for use in the initial diagnosis of active H. pylori infection, as well as post treatment follow up.
