The high shear microplate from Fluxion Biosciences can be used with propriety BioFlux live cell imaging workstations to simulate various pathological vascular conditions, making it a suitable for thrombosis and platelet studies, cardiovascular and immunological drug screening and cell/bacteria adhesion research. The BioFlux 200 and 1000 platforms incorporate microfluidic technology to enable plate-based live cell imaging under shear flow conditions that mimic those in the human body. The controller drives the flow of reagents and cells through microfluidic channels running between the wells. Fully programmable changes to shear flow can be made in real time. The standard 48-well plate is suited for studying normal flow conditions in the body, while the high shear plate enables assays under the increased flow characteristic of diseased vasculature. The microplate is compatible with both the 200 and 1000 systems, and the pre-sterilized SBS-standard 48-well plates can be used for up to 24 simultaneous flow experiments. Striving Toward Secondary GoalsLate last month, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich stunned most everyone when he declared his promise that "by the end of my second term, we will have the first permanent base on the moon." While I don’t fault Gingrich for dreaming and trying to set high standards and goals, I can’t help but think of the enormous amount of known and unknown variables that significantly deter this accomplishment...continue
