Deconvolution Software Reduces Need for Sample Re-Analysis

Category: Software

IDENTIFY deconvolution software permits unambiguous identification of the organic constituents of highly contaminated samples without sample preparation or cleanup and cuts analysis time from hours to minutes. A series of proprietary mathematical algorithms identify compounds by deconvoluting their ion signals from non-uniform background interference signals contributed to the total ion current. Most MS data analysis packages can extract individual fragment ions; however, the proprietary algorithms facilitate compound identification for samples regardless of matrix interferences. By "seeing through" matrix interferences, the software reduces the need for sample re-analysis and dilution, and increases confidence in surrogate, internal standard and compound identification. This XML-based software package can open vendor files from all major MS manufacturers and is fully compatible with both NIST and Wiley MS libraries. It is targeted at labs interested in screening large numbers of samples in a short time. The same deconvolution engine as in the IDENTIFY software is also available to MS instrument manufacturers as a DLL file for embedding in their own MS software. The availability of such algorithms is opening up new capabilities in the emerging market for portable MS instrumentation where unambiguous results are required in minutes or seconds for applications such as homeland security, environmental, sick building monitoring, and perimeter air monitoring.

Striving Toward Secondary Goals
Late last month, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich stunned most everyone when he declared his promise that "by the end of my second term, we will have the first permanent base on the moon." While I don’t fault Gingrich for dreaming and trying to set high standards and goals, I can’t help but think of the enormous amount of known and unknown variables that significantly deter this accomplishment...continue
