Centrifugal Fraction Collection with Simultaneous Drying

Category: Chromatography Accessories

The CFC-2x centrifugal extract collection and simultaneous drying system for supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) eliminates the need for post extraction processing. The unit collects extracts into vessels contained within a novel rotor, spinning at speeds sufficient to ensure that material of interest is trapped while allowing CO2 to escape. In addition, it can collect all extracted material into a single vessel or fractionate based on time or detector response. A proprietary mechanism dispenses to the next vessel while the rotor continues to spin. Several standard rotor configurations are available for test tubes and culture bottles along with customized configurations. The elution tube can be configured to collect simultaneously into 2, 4 or 8 positions. The traditional process of recovering the extract into a trap solvent or onto a trap solid (which can result in significant loss of material) has been eliminated, saving hours or even days depending on scale. This allows for the full green potential of SFE to be realized. By eliminating trap solvents and solids, the CFC-2x eliminates the need for any organic solvent (unless it is necessary to increase polarity), thus reducing the overall carbon footprint of the extraction process. If an organic modifier is used to increase the polarity of the CO2, the system simultaneously dries this solvent during collection. At the end of the extraction, the researcher is left with solvent-free material at maximum yields, using less time and effort compared to traditional extraction techniques.

Striving Toward Secondary Goals
Late last month, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich stunned most everyone when he declared his promise that "by the end of my second term, we will have the first permanent base on the moon." While I don’t fault Gingrich for dreaming and trying to set high standards and goals, I can’t help but think of the enormous amount of known and unknown variables that significantly deter this accomplishment...continue
