Mass Spectrometer Accelerates Pesticide Analysis in Drinking Water

The DSQ II single quadrupole mass spectrometer provides an effective method for the accelerated analysis of flame retardants and pesticides in drinking water. Due to the wide mass range of the analysis, this application is challenging. However, innovations in electronic carrier gas control and the fast scanning capabilities of the mass spectrometer result in an average instrument detection limit (IDL) of 0.034 ug/L.The DSQ II single quadrupole mass spectrometer provides an effective method for the accelerated analysis of flame retardants and pesticides in drinking water. Due to the wide mass range of the analysis, this application is challenging. However, innovations in electronic carrier gas control and the fast scanning capabilities of the mass spectrometer result in an average instrument detection limit (IDL) of 0.034 ug/L. Using a surge splitless injection with high column flow rate generates peak widths of 3 sec, which are effectively and accurately characterized due to the DSQ II's fast scanning speeds. Alternative injection, separation and detection parameters are achieved when combining the mass spectrometer, the FOCUS GC gas chromatograph and AS 3000 II autosampler. In addition, EnviroLab Forms 2.5 data analysis and reporting software is used for workflow optimization and data review and reporting. The DSQ II and FOCUS GC combined system meets the quality-control criteria of the EPA method 527 over a calibration range from 0.25 to 10 ug/L.
