ViscoGEL PolyCAT GPC Columns

by Wei Sen Wong, Ph.D., Manager, Analytical Services, Viscotek Corporation

Driven by the need to develop good GPC methods for today’s difficult polymer samples, Viscotek has introduced the use Surface Modified (SM) Organic Gel Columns. This approach is similar to the use of Bonded Phases in HPLC where the stationary phase can play a key role in the separation. Examples of PolyCAT applications will illustrate that good chromatography is possible for Cationic polymers.

The chemical composition of aqueous GPC columns has been relatively unchanged for the last 30 years. The
Methacrylate type gels remain the workhorse of aqueous and biopolymer applications. However, Methacrylate columns are not suitable for Cationic polymers due to ion exchange type interactions. To overcome this ionic effect, users have applied very high levels of salts and buffers. Nevertheless, poor sample recovery and excessive peak tailing may still be an issue for many highly charged materials like cyclodextrin and Aminated Chitosan. These chromatographic problems can ultimately lead to inaccurate molecular results.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race
In the 100 years since Marie Curie won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, women have made leaps and bounds in science and engineering. Following the extreme example of Madame Curie, women have exponentially raised their position in S&E in the last few decades. In a field previously (and traditionally) dominated by men, women seem to be slowly but surely taking over—or at least leveling the playing field. ...continue
