Mass Spectrometer Enables Highly Selective Reaction Monitoring
Coupled to a Surveyor MS pump and autosampler, the TSQ Quantum triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer was used by the U.S. FDA to perform a new LC-MS-MS method that detects melamine content in catfish. The FDA developed the method after the recent discovery of contamination from imported food sources. In addition to the spectrometer, proprietary Xcalibur data system software was used to acquire and analyze the data. The triple quadrupole system enables highly selective reaction monitoring (H-SRM), which facilitates the quick and efficient analysis of complex samples such as animal tissue. The LC-MS-MS system yielded accuracy and precision values for this method that were well within the guidelines of the FDA for analytical method development and validation.
