Headwall launched the Raman Explorer™ product in January, 2005. The Raman Explorer™ is truly a “breakthrough” product in the field of Raman analysis. The system is unique in that it is the industry’s first multi-channel, multi-spectrum spectrometer.
The Raman Explorer™ is based on Headwall’s patented retro-reflective concentric design, a new class of imaging products that produces an exceptional Raman band shape across an extended spectral range.
There are three aspects to Headwall’s innovation that make this such an exciting product for the industry:
• Multi-input design - this feature supports the generation of multi-spectrum capabilities, i.e., the placement of multiple high resolution spectral regions onto a single two dimensional detector plane. Generating an extended Raman spectrum eliminates the need for multiple instruments. This provides for greater analytical capability within a single instrument.
• Multi-channel functionality - this capability allows for the multiple points of measurement thereby reducing the overall cost of measurement per analysis point.
• Application-specific performance - given that Headwall’s core expertise is in the design and manufacture of original diffraction gratings, we are able to provide a different grating for different spectral ranges and application requirements.
Given the innovative design of the Raman Explorer™, the instrument comprises a very small footprint. It is a rugged device with no moving parts. Given the small size of the instrument, Headwall believes that a host of new applications are enabled for chemometric analysis—space exploration (an application for which it was originally designed) to in-line process monitoring (for complex applications such as petrochemical production) to portable, field-based Raman analysis (such as chemical and biological threat identification).
The need for improved quantitative analysis is a driver for a multitude of industry applications. The small instrument size and high optical throughput of the Raman Explorer™ make this an excellent spectral engine to meet the application needs of OEM customers requiring enhanced Raman and photometric accuracy.
The “break-through” design and technological innovation built into the Raman Explorer™ will serve to enable wide-spread usage of Raman analysis, a technique which has historically been limited to large laboratory instruments.
