Increasing the Mileage for Injection Port Septa
Independent road tests reveal improved GC analyses
Douglas Tanner
The durability and bleed characteristics of injection port septa in gas chromatographs (GCs) can materially affect throughput and accuracy of results, as well as the service life of the septum itself. Recently, a new breed of injection port septum, the O-ring designed Cepure Zero, has been launched (see August 2007 Chromatography Techniques, p. 45), and feedback from early users is starting to filter out. Both independent tests and user experiences indicate significantly longer life, elimination of septum coring, fewer needle problems and greatly reduced bleed. The reduced bleed not only eliminates a major contamination source, but also can shorten conditioning times upon startup.
