Quality Control Capability and Bottom Line Get a Boost
The latest advances in analytical instrumentation can improve the bottom line for Food and Beverage processors. For nearly a century, traditional Abbe-type refractometers relied entirely upon operator interpretation of an often "fuzzy" shadowline to obtain a Brix reading for a given sample. The development of automatic refractometers reduced operator error in this regard, but did little to solve some of the other issues that plagued quality control laboratories. Recent advances, however, have led to a new wave of automatic refractometers designed for years of trouble-free service in providing accurate results.
Automatic refractometers have been available for nearly two decades. The main advantage of automatic instruments over traditional "Brass and Glass" instruments is the reduction of operator error due to the elimination of the manual positioning of the shadowline within a crosshair. Instead, a photosensitive detector is used along with sophisticated software algorithms to determine the true Brix value of a solution. In fact, these detectors and software provide almost a tenfold increase in accuracy! The refinement of these systems since their inception has led to still more consistent and accurate results.
