Glass or Deactivated Glass Vials? Factors to be Considered When Choosing the Proper Vial for the Application

by Brian Murphy
Glass and plastic autosampler vials are commonly used to hold samples prior to chemical or biological analysis. The vial, when inserted into an analytical instrument, becomes part of the system. It is the least expensive component and the easiest to replace if it is the source of a problem. This note will focus on factors to consider when determining the proper glass choice.

Glass Types (Described in Brief)

•USP Type I Borosilicate Glass: least reactive
•USP Type II de-alkalized soda-lime glass: less resistant than Type I
•USP Type III soda-lime glass: acceptable for dry powders
•USP Type NP soda-lime glass: general use for non-parenteral applications Glass is classified into types suitable for specified uses by several standards groups, including USP (United States Pharmacopoeia).
