Maintaining chamber temperatures near freezing requires dealing with the affects of ice formation. Unwanted ice accumulation is removed by heating the evaporator during a defrost cycle. This results in elevated temperatures during the temporary loss of active cooling. In large evaporator load applications, such as photostability chambers, this problem is compounded, resulting in a substantial temperature rise. For substances requiring refrigerated temperatures, this can invalidate testing. CARON’s photostability chambers are unique in the way they prevent ice formation (and hence no defrost cycle) while maintaining temperatures around 5 C with 20 fluorescent lamps at full power.
Two evaporator expansion valves are connected in parallel to offer two distinct control modes. For normal operating temperatures, superheat is controlled to provide maximum cooling and response times. For operations with temperatures near 5 C, the evaporator is maintained at a constant temperature just above freezing. This dual mode control allows optimum performance, even at near freezing temperatures, without needing elevated temperatures during a defrost cycle.
CARON’s new photostability chamber offers temperature and humidity control in a benchtop unit. Tight humidity in a small volume requires minute water additions. Our temperature and humidity controlled photostability chambers employ new technology for injecting humidity. State-of-the-art ultrasonic nebulizers vaporize water droplets to a 3 micron mean diameter. This small particle size enhances uniform humidity distribution throughout the chamber without injecting additional unwanted heatespecially beneficial in a compact chamber. Solid state controls enable nearly instantaneous response, further facilitating tight humidity control. Dehumidification is accomplished through mechanical refrigeration.
