ScienceDesk- An Ergonomic Alternative to Conventional Workstations
Andy Stephens
Design concepts in office furniture have changed dramatically over the last 20 years, driven by the need to increase efficiency, better utilize space, and reduce injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Today's office units feature sound-absorbing wall panels to reduce noise. The workspace is organized so that everything is in easy reach. Keyboards and monitors are located at the optimum height to reduce stress and strain on the neck, back, and wrists; office chairs are ergonomically designed to provide lumbar support and encourage correct posture; electrical connections are plentiful and located eliminating the need for extension cords and octopus sockets.
However, step into the production or laboratory area and things are much different. Large, cumbersome, general-purpose workbenches are the rule, with assembly and test stations designed to fit the workspace, not optimized for the task at hand. But this too is changing. Faced with the need to maximize the use of scarce manufacturing space, to reduce repetitive motion injuries, and to maintain a highly skilled workforce in a very competitive labor market, employers are looking for more effective ways to equip the laboratory or production floor.
