An OEM Solution for Automating MALDI Plate Applications
Daniel Doolittle
There is an increasing need for automating the addition of matrix and sample onto MALDI (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization) targets or plates. Gilson, Inc.-with the support of one of its OEM customers, Bruker Daltonik, has developed an application to increase throughput for reading a homogeneous mix of sample and matrix with mass spectrometry (MS).
Many application-specific hurdles were overcome in automating this process. Some of the major conditions that were overcome are sample and matrix volume, the ratio of matrix to sample, plate surface chemistry as well as the accuracy of the sample location on the plate. The plate's surface chemistry significantly affects sample concentration, homogeneity, and sample spacing. Each of these parameters ultimately affects the concentration and drying time in preparation of the MS.
