Maximize Performance from High-Sensitivity GC/MS Systems
by Gary Stidsen, Innovations Manager, and Neil Mosesman, Product Marketing Manager
Abstract
The newest generation of GC/MS systems has significantly greater sensitivity relative to older models. Column bleed levels that were acceptable with older systems can prevent analysts from taking full advantage of the capabilities of the new systems. In analyses of semivolatile environmental pollutants and other active, higher molecular weight compounds, ultra-low-bleed columns, and simple modifications to analysis conditions help ensure that challenging detection limits are met.
Recent improvements to GC/MS systems designs have greatly increased instrument sensitivity. Because of these improvements, however, column bleed levels that formerly were considered acceptable now often prevent an analyst from using the sensitivity of the system to full advantage. Improvements in polymer synthesis and tubing deactivation enabled Restek chemists to develop an inert, stable column that minimizes interference with high-temperature analyses. In contrast to columns produced through older technologies, the new column helps ensure greater instrument stability and lower detection limits for semivolatile organic analytes: bleed from a 30 m × 0.25 mm ID, 0.25 μm df column is less than 6 pA at 340 C.
