Freezer/Mills Retain Low Temperatures throughout Process
Updated versions of the 6700 cryogenic mill, the freezer/mill models 6750 and 6850 are used on samples normally considered difficult or impossible to grind at ambient temperatures. These include polymers, wood, bone, tissue and rubber. The mills embrittle samples by immersing the grinding vial in liquid nitrogen and then pulverize them with a magnetically driven impactor. Low temperatures are retained throughout, preserving structural and compositional aspects degraded or volatilized during room temperature grinding. The mills are suitable for numerous applications, including DNA extraction from old or weathered bone, trace-element analysis of hair, screening of asbestos-containing materials, drug research and diffraction studies of soft materials.
