Ion Sources for Exact Mass Measurement

Three interchangeable sources for the proprietary AccuTOF LC mass spectrometer provide increased versatility. An AP/MALDI (Atmospheric Pressure, Matrix Assisted-Laser Desorption Ionization) ion source, when combined with the AccuTOF LC/MS, allows very high mass accuracy (~5 ppm) and high throughput identification of proteins and peptides with post-translational modifications. The source makes both high-performance LC/MS and MALDI available in a single, affordable mass spectrometer. Additionally, two electrospray ionization (ESI) sources are available for high-throughput analysis and exact mass measurement. A dual ESI source features two sprayers that simultaneously introduce a reference compound and a sample mixture. The reference compound is used as a means of drift correction and enables exact mass measurement and correlation without disturbing or suppressing the concentration of the analyte. A corona ESI source is equipped with both an ESI sprayer and a corona-discharge electrode. The combination of ESI and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) in a single source is useful for rapid analysis of unknown substances and for improved efficiency in determining optimal analysis conditions.
