Small Conference, Big Impressions
Attendees learn the importance of greener technologies
Jennifer Miller
I recently attended the 1st International Conference on SFC on September 24-25 in Pittsburgh, PA, a small gathering of chromatographers and vendors all dedicated to the concept of "green." Though the six-hour drive clear across Pennsylvania was long and somewhat mind numbing, the destination proved itself the moment I received my badge and sat down to take in the short plenary lecture, entitled "Green Chemistry: Challenges and Opportunities," conducted by John Warner, co-founder and chief technology officer of the new Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry in Massachusetts. His passion for a greener planet through greener chemistry is inherent in his nature and his work, as he has conducted countless talks, authored several books and articles, and received numerous awards and patents.
In an interview conducted by CNET news.com on October 8, 2007, Dr. Warner states that there is a lack of education available to current chemists and chemistry students regarding toxicology as a cause of environmental harm, and that this is an inherent downfall in the fight for green. "If you can put in their hands the tools to understand that, then they may invent new products and processes that...look at toxicity and environmental harm as a design flaw. So green chemistry, succinctly, is making materials in an environmentally responsible way, and the technology required to do that," Warner says.1
